Why Netcool Monitoring Is Destroying America. According to Alan Ganek, chief technology officer, IBM Tivoli Software, the new product, Cisco Assurance Management Solution, blends Cisco’s Active Network Abstraction (ANA) device management and mediation technology with IBM’s Tivoli Netcool/OMNIbus and Netcool/Precision management software. According to him, the suppliers have been developing the product for almost a year.

Ganek is optimistic that the new solution would appeal to huge corporations like financial services providers that are searching for an easier approach to manage their heterogeneous networks in addition to telecom carriers.

Ganek noted that although he refused to provide a specific number, IBM does have “extremely high hopes” for the potential income the codeveloped product may bring in. The extended collaboration between IBM and Cisco was not disclosed to include any financial information.

The majority of IBM’s total collaboration with Cisco has been on the services sector, according to Ganek. In the software industry, “this new one really gets into our development teams.”

Since their wide strategic alliance was established in 1999, IBM and Cisco have been working together on a number of projects, including the growth of their unified communications collaboration and the creation of a joint cooperative support service.

Network fault monitoring, issue isolation, and real-time service-level event management are among the capabilities included in the initial iteration of the Cisco Assurance Management Solution.

More Tivoli systems and network management technologies from IBM will be included into the program in next releases, according to Ganek. The Tivoli Change and Configuration Management Database and Tivoli Monitoring would be the logical next enhancements, he said.

Long-term, Ganek added, fresh iterations of the Cisco Assurance Management Solution may also include technologies IBM obtained via the acquisition of Vallent, a maker of network performance monitoring software. In February, IBM completed the acquisition of Vallent, and the software was added to their Tivoli business segment. After acquiring network management expert Micromuse in February 2006, IBM obtained access to the Netcool software. Additionally, he noted, it’s feasible that IBM and Cisco would release additional jointly created software.

Ganek emphasized that the partnership between IBM and Cisco isn’t exclusive and that IBM also has “excellent ties” and collaborates extensively with the majority of the other manufacturers of network equipment.

The Tivoli netcool monitoring family’s other products, such as Tivoli Business Service Manager and Tivoli Netcool/Impact, are already compatible with Cisco’s ANA. For a while now, Cisco has been rebranding IBM’s Tivoli Netcool as Cisco Info Center, and more than 500 of its clients utilize it.
